If they sent me up a tree in this kit i'd want my money back!

Seriously though, these short courses will give you a bit of a taster of the job, but they will not show what it is like in the real world, neither will they turn you into a fully functioning tree surgeon.

Hi folks,

I am a newbie to the industry and am currently working on a voluntary basis with my local council to gain some first hand experience before enrolling on a course.

Could you give me your opinions of a fast track course such as this:

http://www.capel.ac.uk/Courses/Upminster/CGLI_0220_Prac_Arb_Skills_998175qu.htm

Cheers

I did this course about 6 years ago... it is exactly what it says. It will give you an overall introduction to the practical side of tree surgery. Covers some ident, planting, pest and disease, but you will gain a lot more knowledge from doing the job. The course doesn't include the NPTC modular assessments, this need to be paid on top. the training is to LANTRA levels, but you still need to do NPTC assessments.

One good thing is if you can read between the lines and use a bit of your grey matter you 'may' not need to pay for the individual NPTC training modules. So you can save a bit of money.

BTW... for the best combination I would try and gain experience elsewhere whilst on the course, which does help to reinforce the information the course offers. Another bonus is that I was signing on at the time of the start of the course, course fees were dropped and I only had to pay the 50 gbp examination fees.

good luck with whatever you decide. :thumbup1:

Cheers for your comments and opinions folks. I think I may persue work experience with one of the many local Arborists in my area before enrolling on a course.

Should there be anything in particular I look for when seeking a potenial emplyer within the industry eg, do they run a good practice, have all the correct tickets etc?

The best way to evaluate a potential employer is to go and do a trial day with them. Once you've worked with a few, you'll get to know how things should be run, and you'll have a chance to talk to existing employees and find out what they think of the company.
