last try is it the fungi working its way round the rays

mmm, your thinking isnt bad, fungi appear (imo) to have little capacity to get "round" rays, but through them yes, but not backward, hence the wedge shaped compartmentalisation effect.:thumbup1:

o.k give me a moment.....

I do hope you all dont think i am being at all condescending nor patronising, i am trying to give you eyes, eyes to read these things and do not mean to come across as anything other than helpfull:001_smile:

O.K so here we go-

In blue, the area that was the origional wood volume affected in the origional wounding.

in orange, the woundwood rib that formed over that origional damage.

in yellow the wood secondarly infected via a crack at the cracks that form at rib edges or inrolled margins sometimes (shown in the black circle posted before)

see the shape of the orange highlighted area? it is the shape of an inrolled rib occlusion!

I see it now. As the tree was healing from the edges the squirrel came back for another nibbling sesh and opened that area up to the fungi that was in the primary area dn because the wood is softer in the occlusions the rot acted quicker. Thus causing the tree to set up a secondary bark occlusion and make the wound healing uneven. Is that the right answer Hama?

And have you ever come across Squirell damage with the associated rot pictures like this before?
