Excavator track pins

take 2 track pads off either side of it try and get a bucket tooth up against the link then grind down the old pin and use it as a dolly if you were in the falkirk area i couldhave got you a shot of a track press i take it its a 13ton machine from the size of the pin remember and wear safety glasses as i had a piece of steel in my cheek for 2 years from doing this

 

Unfortunately its only a little 3 ton machine but the pins are big because it is quite old. I thought there must be a special tool for them. If I have no joy heating the track then I will admit defeat and leave it to the experts. I was toying with changing to rubber tracks but have no experience of rubber tracks in a woodland environment. Any body any experience ?? I will using the excavator with a grab to feed the biomass chipper.

I've not yet done a pin without using heat, not ideal as the seals that

come with the kit get melted.

 

Rubber tracks are ideal on site, the grip out in the woods is far from good:001_tongue:

for that size of machine i wouldnt bother rigging up a track press you should be able to hit it in. 14lb hammer and swing it like a golf club:thumbup:

just get the gas axe on it to warm it up then hammer the crap out of it. as soon as you get past the point of no return it will become easier. like breezeblock said, you would be better off making a tommy bar up by welding the old pin perpendicularlilarily onto a metal bar and get someone to line it up that way.

make sure that before the new pin goes fully home you grind any burr off the last inch or so of the new pin, dont freeze the pin, when frozen metal makes contact with cherry red metal, only one thing happens,, big headaches!!
