If you are the owner and user of the equipment, it just needs to have the safety features fitted when it was new. If it was going to be used by an employee you may need to improve the safety features.

The only exception to this is chippers, the new H&S features brought in in 2000 were retrospective, meaning all chippers had to be altered to meet the new standards.

i dont think the new mizers have any extra features to the one at Riseholme Dave. is it still going strong?? i used to love playing with that... do you still have that ancient pto chipper there??? that IS a death trap.....

Hi Kev

I concur with you regarding the use of the Mizer, just for the record i totally destroyed the old drum chipper. The anvil blade decided it would like to have a spin inside the drum housing, needless to say the blades all fragmented and judging by the condition of the drum casing almost penetrated through 1/4" of steel ....aparently you could hear its death cry the other side of the campus ...had the benefit of forcing the purchase of a new timber wolf though so best forgotten.

Thanks for your help, also found a hse information sheet regarding retrofitting for puwer 98, now feel less lightly to fall foul of risk assessment issues. during my internet trawl for info i found the following link for blade breaking mechanisms [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3mzhvMgrLE]YouTube - SAWSTOP in TimeWarp[/ame] it may intrest you, the guy who invented this system is certainly brave?
