After googling the Maltese salt tree Darniella melitensis I would agree with Christreeroot. The Norfolk Island Pine (which has a hardiness zone of 10 and 11) has those spiny things (another highbrow term) all the way up their limbs, which don't appear to show in the photo.

 

Just a guess, though.
