Old builders bags

Is it true that you are only supposed to use thos builders bags once or does that only apply if they were used for sand/gravel and not log's? I mean is it feasible or legal even to re use them for customers and give them a little bit of discount if they return the bag's for to refill them? Seeing as they are a bit pricy to have to get new every time?

any tip's or advice?

yeah...try going to the builders merchants and seeing if they have a heap of spares/unwanted...I got some like that the other day!!

No problem with using old builders bags unless they are refundable from the company. Most builders merchants now use disposable bags, and so customers just bin them.

Watch out if you are offered old bags stored outside. They can degenerate in the sun causing unseen weakness. It's not amusing having filled a 1t bag only to have it split open when its lifted up !!!

Since they carry a load and are lifted, they come under LOLER regs, believe it or not.

Builders merchants used to reuse them, but then HSE said they should be inspected and certificated after every use, hence now all the builders merchants use disposable ones.

So if you want to follow the letter of the law, then you should probably buy a new bag every time you sell one.

a lot of the bags have a label on them stating that they are single lift bags.I re use them several times until they have a tear in refilling with left over sand from my work

1 ton bags are meant to lift one load of sand, or gravel or whatever, which weighs a ton. A bag full of logs, or even cut logs, wouldn't weigh anywhere near a ton.

 

I'd say use them until they start losing a few threads.

I reckon it would be different if the bags were used as giant tesco bag's (ie just to hold volume and not lifted on or off a wagon with a crane) I think someone mentioned that they load theres with cut log's and tip the lot off there tipper

tip the logs out of the bag and use it again.

I just use the bags as a measure really, empty on delivery and take the bag home again.
