No, its not derailing.

You seem to think an excuse such as shortage of money is "understandable" to top a tree, whereas, you seem to be offended about spiking a live tree.

I personally believe topping a healthy tree would have much more long term detrimental effects than spiking it.

I just wondered if you could expand on your opinion.

What benefits do you get from spiking a tree thats being reduced as has been said it makes it more difficult anyway. It doesnt make you any monney hence I see no reason behind it.

But topping a tree is just giving you another days work in if you go and look at a job to top a tree and your short on work it gives you some extra work.

Im not condoning either there both bad practice and if i have said otherwise i apologise it was not ment to sound like.

I dont get any benifit from spiking live trees as i dont do it.

Obviously your first priority is financial not tree health, so i dont value your opinion.

Surely spiking a live tree such as been discussed here would be to the benefit of the climber. Making him able to work quicker, being more productive, getting an awkward job done quicker, hence more profit. So spiking trees does make you money.

I didn't say that I used spikes to get up a tree that was going to be topped or re-topped or pruned for that matter, I was just trying to find out why, if the tree is already hacked to smithereens, spiking it makes such a big difference. It seems plenty of people are more than happy to top a tree if the price is right (and believe me, we can't all be choosy about the jobs we turn down) but won't spike because it damages the tree. I admire those that won't top trees under any circumstances and I wish I was financially stable enough to take that attitude but those that harp on about not spiking but then are happy to take down a healthy tree or top another so the land owner can have a view...... isn't that somewhat like the pot calling the kettle?
