Have noticed this to the base of an oak tree at the end of our garden, I would appreciate guidance on what it is etc..

Does it pose any issues to the tree? And if so can it be treated do you know?

Yes it is a problem, as far as i'm aware it can't be treated but i'll leave that to the people who have more knowledge. I normally only get told what to do in these circumstances.

 

I've always been told that the Ganoderma genus is one of the top 5 to look out for

a little in depth that is, but basically its a fungus that will cause butt rot. how big is the tree and how large is the canopy?

Difficult for me to tell not being an expert, but the crown in clearly taller than a two story building. The tree, other then some poor maintenance by previous owners over the years, looks in good health. I was planning on having a simple crown lift to remove the dead wood etc but concerned by this find. Have attached a picture for indication of size.

IMO it will stand up for a few good years as yet, but a light crown thin to reduce some of the weight wouldnt hurt.....of course thats just an assessment from the picture so dont hold me to that. you could have the decay measured but thats not cheap.
