felled another of Lincolns mature (60ft+) elms today.... think it only leaves us with around 10 surviving.... we are averaging around 2 a year so that would mean they will all be gone in 5 more years.... such a shame...

Definitely a shame. Anyone using the timber?

Can you get some pics of the others kev. I was born in Lincoln, and moved away soon after, but i had no idea there were mature elms there!

i can get pics if i remember.... didnt get any today cos it was a pressure job on a busy road not far from the fire and ambulance stations, so we had to be done as quick as safely possible. the main stem will be sold to a small specialist mill not too far away, and some of the other big bits will go to a local carver... the rest just join the firewood pile of a local producer.

Cool. Its stunnig timber, especially if burry of course, and along with ash was partly responsible for me getting into milling. I rarely see even 15" diameter elm, and its almost exclusively u.stricta, so long and skinny whilst it survives.

Such a shame. I'm young enough , just, to never have seen mature elms in any great numbers. Apparently there used to be loads where I grew up, but the only time ever see any mature elms is when I venture into Brighton.

I studied at Riseholme college back in the late 80's. There were still some big old elms around the grounds there but the Forestry dept was in the process of removing them all as most were dead or half dead. Would have kept some of the fires burning for a while as some of them were huge.
