angled back cuts

it wont make a difference when felling, provided the end result complies of a hinge minimum of 1 inch or 10% of the true diameter of the tree. but it is a waste of timber. i was taught an inch at the bottom is worth a foot at the top. thats probably why its seen as bad practice (in a forestry sense). the angled back cut is a reconised copice technique.:icon14:

if the stem is that thin then you can cut and hold, or cut and snap, if it is too heavy then you should be able to bore cut and leave a conventional horizontal hinge, I dont see any need for a downwards back-cut, it is bad practice
so you have 2 leaning stems together with little gap and they need to be felled opposite ways, there about 20ft tall and 3 inches in diameter.........what do you do then?

i cant see it being bad practice on the odd occasion, this jobs all about doing what works safely and aslong as you start high so you still have a hinge and step then why not????:bongsmi:

Angled cuts are hard to wedge, or lever. Also the grain is harder to read- too easy to cut through your hinge if it does not run vertical

yes but in a situation its acceptable

I was taught on forward leaning trees, you do your usual sink, then bore in, then fell by cutting at a 45 degree to stop it spliting, but on a normal fell you wouldnt do your felling cut at an angle, it is bad practice, as has been said you couldnt wedge or use your felling bar properly.
