If the tree died quickly, what ever has killed it will have affected the whole tree. Me thinks that you will have some logs that will smell sweet when they are burned. Time to start looking for a replacement tree. But do not plant it close to the dead one, or it will suffer the same fate.

Any ideas what has killed it ?
