Roadside Decay

One of the best examples of Daedalea quercina I have ever come across.

Caught this out of the corner of my eye as I was driving home through Thetford Forest today, back from the Forest Health day at Santon Downham.

I've rarely seen it on a wound on the tree, more usually on detached deadwood or fallen trunks.

... like this prolific annual and perennial fruiting I found yesterday on a stump of Q. rubra ? Great pictures :thumbup1: , especially the last one.

I wonder if the creaters of the early Labyrinths & mazes got their inspiration from the myco world ?

Could be, the Genus name Daedalea refers to Daedalus, who for king Minos designed and built the still present labyrinth of Knossos (Crete) with the bull Minotaur guarding it and together with his son Icarus escaped from it using sticks, wax and feathers to make wings from. According to the myth, Icarus flew too close to the sun, the wax melted and he drowned in the Aegean See.

That my old buddy, is a fandooby find:thumbup1:

Really couldn't believe it as i drove passed, so much so, that I assumed it was Ash.

Got down the road a fair bit and it struck me that I knew the road was lined with Beech.

Brakes, quick U turn and park up on the verge, 'you' know how it is
