Merc is a good choice, I ran an 814 for several years, if you can find an 817 it will tow better but clearly the bigger motor will be a bit dearer to run. Well worth the trade off IMO.

I have a 814 curtain side. Absolute bomb proof but if you need to go off road make sure you get the 4x4 version.

had a 612 vario tipper was very very good truck would buy it back off the guy i sold it to any time.
