Tree id help please

[MR TREEBUS]

Hi,found these logs whilst splitting,cant seem to identify what tree its from.

Bark looks similar to Aspen but has a paper like outer layer that you can peel off like birch.

The wood itself is very hard,heavy and dense like beech and in the outer section has a grain pattern similar to beech,the inner section/heartwood seems paler with no apparent graining.

I also found some round ball like burrs/growths in the bark,which when peeled of were beautifully patterned 'balls' of wood.

 

Apologies for my descriptions, any help to id the tree much appreciated...

I think it might have been a bit big for rowan, or holly as the rings that i split were a good 20 inch diameter

Looks like a sorbus to me an you can get some decent diameter ones.

 

Failing that maybe a hornbeam.

Had a quick look at Sorbus torminalis bark images on google and found one that looks very similar.

Fairly rare or local tree and the ones I've seen have a more fissured bark.
