Noticed this today. Speaking to a guy about clearing up a fallen lime tree today and noticed this on a Beech. Pointed it out and apparently the crack wasn't there/he didn't notice it on Friday:ohmy:

Carabiner is on for scale. Appears to be fruiting bodies inside the fracture (I think its Ganoderma appalantum:confused1::blushing:but I could be wrong) Crack is roughly 1 inch wide at its biggest

Is it effed?

Cheers for any input.

Maybe applanatum Tom, though could also be pfeifferi.

If you get back, give the top crust a scratch, if it looks like bees wax, they could be pfeifs.

How far up does the crack extend up, or does it fininsh like it looks on pic 2 ?

No further than the picture prob about 15ish ft. There is a large hollow wound that had a pigeon living in it, (it made me nearly foul myself when it flew out unexpectedly) and you could see daylight through it.

Is the canopy protruding out from the surrounding trees ?

Does it get more torsional force than the other trees?

Has anything changed in the immeadiate vicinity in the last 18 mths etc....

Any of it's neighbours been cut down?

Nothing unusual from what I could see. Walked around and had a little look, its near to water but nothing looked like it had changed recently. No signs of any neighboring tree work been done.

If there are any targets (buildings, public highway, etc) with in a 360 degree falling radius no matter if tree are in the way. Fell it. A tree of that girth could easily flatten its neighbouring trees and then flatten anything else. I am a Countryside Ranger with many urban sites with lots of targets so anything within falling radius of a target with a significant defect has to be removed ASAP.
