We felled some Trees off a cliff and into the sea,interestingly it was about a week before the buds burst on the Birch so sank!The pine floated butt up but gave more resistance through the water .We attached a line to the Trees before we felled them,we timed this job for an incoming tide and lifted the Trees out whole with the hiab.

I'll swap your pine and birch in the sea for my wind thrown pine in a stagnant pond. It was vile once it was winched up onto the bank, with all the slime and sludge out the bottom of the pond.

Last time I did one like that it was a conservation volunteer thing. I had twenty groundies all eager to help.

 

We were reinstating an old duck pond, we drained it down to the sludge. I clear all the overhang from about thirty trees. roping the lumps then just dropping them down.

 

There is an art to getting a log or branch to land square flat in the mud to maximise the splash effect

 

The groundies were absolutely covered in foul smelling sludge within the first hour:icon14:

 

I right enjoyed myself that day.

We've just been pulling some out of the upper Thames, little freshwater mussels and loads of sludge on the limbs that had dipped under.....
