small logsplitter advice please

just had a client ring me for advice on splitters. He is looking at buying a 5tonne leccy model. My opinion is that this isnt going to be man enough for heavy duty splitting (he bought in about 3tons of seasoned beech rings, 3-5feet dia) Now from a commercial point of view I would have thought a bigger machine, say 13tonne would just do the job, but its a one off domestic purchase fr the home-owner, and he needs to know if 5tonne is enough. I've never used one of these small splitters so dont know what they're like.

they're ok as long as he's just splitting a barrow load at a time for himself, if he's going to split the whole lot in one go then it'll struggle..

Same here.

 

he will probably have to put the saw through the big rings to break them down abit before puting them on the splitter.

 

He will be better off getting something with more power really rather than maxing a 5t out.

you've seen what the splitter on my processor will do andy, thats only 6.9t. as long as the splitter is set up in a way that he can manouvre the pieces on it to split at the optimum points.....its unlikely it will go straight through the middle of them

He only splits kindling on his though not logs, being a dwarf they feel like logs to him.

My thoughts exactly. I'd hate to see him spend say 300quid on something that will struggle to do the job, if it was nice straight grained timber it wouldnt be a issue, but well-seasoned, twisty rings from the bottom end of the butt of beech is going to push a small machine to (IMO) beyond its capability. He's from 'oop North somewere, so grudges spending a shilling, mind I could lend him maul and grenade so he sees what real work is.

I've a petrol engine 6 ton small commercial/ large domestic splitter, It was ex hire fleet from Ben Burgess of Norwich. They regularly update their gear and sell on their used gear to represent excellent value . It could be worth checking their web site.
