Woolly aphid

Got a call from a customer who thinks his young Beech, around 25' to the tip, is suffering a woolly aphid infestation. I have not seen the tree since it became affected.

He says the tip leaf on each twig is curled up like a cigar.

Do you think the tree will be badly stunted by the attack??

He wants to try and get the tree spayed, is this practical?? (there is a neighboring garden directly behind the tree) and whats it likely to cost??

I would imagine the dry weather will make their affect greater, is this true??

Many thanks Dave.

It is possible to spray a small tree, use Provado Ultimate Bug Killer, a pre-mixed insecticide. Follow instructions carefully. Tbh I wouldnt normally bother unless its a really heavy infestation. If there are signs of ladybird or hoverfly larvae or adults feeding on them, I would rather let nature control them and keep its balance

I ve heard even Bartletts Tree Experts talk about spraying whole trees in built environments with chemical controls...wasnt sold on the idea myself!

Too much scope for overspray..whatever they say!

Use something benign , well, thats a bit different story!
