I was asked to supply graded timber, and sought the advice of a friend with a huge commercial mill, who is qualified to grade timber, and he told me that there wasnt a uk softwood timber that could be graded for construction for reasons mentioned earlier, ring spacing etc. i was particularly asking about larch and douglas BTW.

Any reflections on using it in the round? how's the barn now?

I've heard that it's not used for construction in the uk. is that in so far as, it's not sawn into say 2by4's because it doesn't come upto strength or the whole trees are just crap?

My trees weren't big enough to mill. I used them green and all seems well. I was worried that the daub would crack, but it hasn't.

I've just built a reciprocal roof using 5-6" poles - really quick, loads of fun.

As tommer says, it's a strength issue with the speed of growth.

Jamie, I have a project on the go that may require services such as yours, I'll be in touch. We're planning a house build, & had wanted to use some our own Larch as we have very little other use for it, other selling it. I need to know more about why we may not be able to use it, more info people, bring it on, I'm a sponge for your knowledge:)
