Hamas back! and knackered!

Recommended Posts

Well, as youve no doubt noticed Ive been abscent for a few days, been on a bat ecology course in Kolnicote woods with Geoff Billington, days in classroom and nights in woods and I am cream crackered!

Was an amazing 4 days but hard going after a day and a night!

The site is a must see, even if not on this course, ancient Sessile oak pollards amoungst first class temperate rain forest/atlantic oak habitat.

Unfortunatley due to time pressures and daylight avaliability I have not many photos to show for it, but those I have will go to my week pictoraly speaking thread, not enough to make a dedicated thread unfortunatley.:blushing:

I found an an ancient rowan of 68cm DBH which was one of the main highlights, beside the bats, etc.

I cant rate the course highly enough, though it isnt everyones bag, and very hard going, your feet wont touch the floor the whole time, Geoff appears to be some form of robot that needs no sleep!:laugh1:

The one thing that really suprised me was just how important bat law is to US, and if you havent done any formal bat courses i suggest you do as soon as possible!

sounds just the ticket hama, will you now be able to do tree/bat surveys and charge a healthy wack!

Currently i am only able to go so far as to find physical evidence of a roost, at which point I must cease and call in a specialist.

But I am going to spend some time and volunteer as well as train towards a bat handlers liceance, then i can survey propper, capture and handle bats but this will take at least a seasons hard effort.

then i will be an asset for sure. Not many arbs with a handlers liceance!:thumbup1:

somerset, porlock bay

You on the source again T? :001_tongue:

Glad to hear the course delivered.

Was tree habitat given any equal billing with the furries, in terms of how important it is to attemnpt to retain something that is host to many, many generations ?

Ask this, as the question was raised at Broadway as to giving the bats the complete focus instead of the vets, in relation to working on them (the trees), which TG was non too happy about if I recall.

No David, but I think a lot of ground was covered!

Im going to be talking some more I feel anyways, as apparently VERY little is known about what goes on above the canopy at night.

I suggested a little nite time shannanigans canopy bound in tree boats which seems to have been well recieved, this is going to get very interesting!

Just need to work out a system for the suspension of nets in high canopy and logistics!
