New fan belt? Ok I'll get one of those too, I'm open to anything now! Oil change on the cards too. I miss using the old girl so all fingers crossed.

Ok bits ordered will report back next week. Been thinking about the fan belt and actually this problem started when the altenatuer was removed due to a noisy bearing. It might just be the problem!!

TC, for a few quid its worth trying.

The reason i said so was many years back, in a former life i was working on a farm that bought a new combine. It had a big v6 in it and was fine running normal cutting but when it had the straw chopper in gear it over heated.

The combine manufacturers (New Holland) after much scratching of heads, kept ringing Merc and saying there was something wrong but the only reply they got back was "It will not be the engine"

To cut the long story short, they eventually came out to look at the combine and discovered the wrong belt had been fitted by N.H. Merc ended up billing them for time. It turned out they had either fitted a toothed belt and should have been smooth or vice versa. Cant remember now.

In short the merc guy who solved the problem said that the type, condition and tension of belts on all merc engines was critical when under full load.

I just hope this is the case for you too and solves the issue.

Let us know how it goes.

I would drop out the water in the rad and refill with radiator flush and run it for a couple of days then drain and flush the system.

Also check the inner core matrix (zigzag stuff inbetween)

The outside can look clean and nice but the inner can have rotted away like my landrover did, shine a light through the rad fins to check it's clean and good

18 stoner thanks for that, new belt on it's way. Dean, the coolant is new and rad flushed few times by garage then I took it off again to rad specialist and they checked it out for two days and said all is fine with it. Really wish I could solve the problem as I miss using her now.

Yes donk the belt drives both the waterpump and the fan. Belt has been on there since I've had it and it doesn't look worn or loose but happy to change it.

check your air filter, can cause overheating if blocked, usually get black smoke aswell thou, viscous fan or blocked rad is my thoughts, had same prob on an 1823 merc last week, rad test showed good flow, rad capacity was down by 5 litres thou, ended up with a new radiator, good luck

If i could fit a rad and only pay for it if it works id do it for sure. dont want to spend crazy money if i dont need too.
