I've actually done a little bit of original research work on root severance response since I started this thread (eight years gone in the blink of an eye David!) and I think best practice has this a bit wrong.

 

Tony, This is such an interesting subject. I'd really like to hear more about the research you've been doing regarding root severance response. Do you have any photos or documentation that you would be willing to share with us all?

I've been watching this copper beech for a few years waiting to see what damage the root crown would play on the wall.

 

Looks like the lower section has either been pushed out by the roots or been removed.
