PI Insurance

Advice needed, please.

To echo a couple of the previous threads, I'm thinking about setting myself up as a sole trading Consultant, but I am totally naive about where to get insurance, how much cover to go for, how much to expect to pay etc, etc...

I have been working for various agencies over the years, mainly doing work for L.A.s and I have gotten thoroughly sick of the amount the agencies charge compared to how little I actually recieve .

I have been self employed in the past, so that side of things I'm OK with, but any advice on the insurance side of things would be most welcome.

I think £500,000 is what most working tree surgeons have in way of professional indemnity. It's a different thing. I would have said you'd need 5 million really, thats what most contracts will ask for.

ps Last time I needed PI I was quoted £350ish I think. Remember that it's an ongoing thing as a survey you do could cause problems in 5 years time so you can need to buy an ongoing or one of payment if you stop working for yourself

Oh the conundrum: need work to pay for all those minor issues like insurance, but can't pay for such things until I get work... :confused1:

I haven't Googled any companies as yet as I was hoping for a recommendation to make life easier. This has given me a starting point - thanks.

Be careful with that though Liam, thats more for covering you if you mess up and take the wrong tree down, and general advice that could be misconstrued. Probably not really suitable for somebody who is soley surveying and consulting.

Trust are probably the easiest to deal with in terms of their set pricing but not always the cheapest. I think I dealt with Cameron when I was with them. Seemed on the ball, but not competitive this year.
