The only jobs you can really price over the phone is large contract day rate jobs. Isn't it?

 

No...

 

Never price a job without looking.

 

How many men will it be ball busting or easy days, will it be tackle busting days or easy days, will it be fuel thirsty days, chipper running all day.

i have done jobs blind loads of times, never lost out yet. I give peolpe the idea of costs aswell over the phone, some customers are nervous and calling up a tradesman can be quite a stressfull thing for some, i re assure them over the phone that i will find a way to do their job as economically as possible and give them examples close to them as most of my jobs come from me being seen working close to them. I will also ask them their budget and depending on their description of the job i will be honest and tell them if i think it will be possible on their budget.

What works or doesn't work for us may be different for him.

 

Why, just recently, I voiced my concern over the loss of both Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King at the heart of the England defence, and the man muttered something which sounded not unlike -

That's what I mean, mate.

 

If you can make it work for you, great. I can't. Simples.

 

go on try it Mark, break the mould and make some new rules, by humming and hawing on the phone may seem ok to you but you are not filling the customer with confidence, saying move on blah blah blah is giving up, i dont give up i keep going and going, persistance is better than talent mate:biggrin:

Dont take this the wrong way stevie babe but quoting over the phone in this business is extremely fool hardy.

 

You may not have been bitten yet and you also probably haven't got a rigid pricing scheme.

 

One thing I do do is consistent pricing, I have a set criteria and can quote one job one year and without referencing it quote within £50 a year down the line.

 

My prices are not "off the top of my head"

 

Christ, there's many on here have majorly cocked their price up after a site visit and looking at it from all angles so expecting to get it right over the phone is rediculous

You've got me wrong mate.

 

There's no humming and hawing involved here. I simply tell them I can't possibly price over the phone without potentially ripping them off, and explain in my renowned calm and placid manner that I can pop round at their convenience and give them a free, no obligation quotation.

 

If they are reasonable people, they listen to that.

 

If they don't I give them Plippys number....
