Champion Quercus sp ?

Found this cracking tree hidden away on an estate, hope you enjoy the pics:thumbup:

 

The leaf looks similar to a turkey but I am stumped to be honest so get your thinking caps on or am I just thick..

 

I know that they can cross with other oaks but they only came here in 1735 to Exeter so that would make it 275 yrs old? Is it not too big?

Cracking tree indeed. Get a lot of firewood out of that beauty.

The centre I could scrabble in and it was hollow for quite a way up. 20ft

 

No history could be found about the tree

Is it a Lucombe Oak ? Quercus x hispanica

 

It was a hybrid developed in the 1760s in Exeter

not sure if it keeps its leaves as no-one to ask.

But it was in the west country and mr L did import the first turkey

Its a leaf exchanging tree

 

It keeps its leaves until it grows the new ones, sheds the old leaves then immediately sprouts the new ones

 

The leaves shapes can be quite varied too

Think you are right looks like a Lucombe Oak to me. There are different types though!

There is HUGE one at Kew that was actually transplanted as a mature tree. Worth a look if you are ever near.
