Certainly looks like a Beech Matt, but unless the picture is very deceiving, that would make it the smallest champion Beech ever

Not a Beech Im afraid

 

I agree beech much larger.

 

Camera angle is deceptive, but not deliberately so, its the only angle I could get unless I wanted to scale a wall or trespass.

 

Its a fairly uncommon species in UK, and not native.

When you say close does that mean it is same family as zelkova?

Similar in appearance, not related, not Elm family.

 

I saw several on a recent visit to Barcelona, in parks.

 

This is the only one I have identified in the UK, and that was thanks to asking the proprietor, and subsequently confirming the spot in Champion Trees book.

a giant sequoia in killburn woods, makes me look like a hobbit, got to be nearly 4ft across!!

 

beautiful tree, I've got 7 growing in my bedroom, they only 3" high at the mo!
