depends how flighty the hens are, ive had certain hens (usually bantam types) that would get ove a 6 ft fence

I never clip wings as we have foxes and I like to think the chicken has a fighting chance of flying away.

 

Our chickens will hop over 3ft but think twice about jumping 6ft.

When clipping wings (or rather the primary flight feathers), do so on only ONE WING rather than both. This will make the birds "tilt" every time they attempt to fly and further impair their flying ability.

 

Furthermore, you get the wing clipping done in half the time :-)

I put fence in for someone with the old rare breed chickens, the area they was country side, Salisbury Plain, there was some digging done and turning back under ground with at least 3 foot of double wire at the base

wire tied, took some time but they've had no probs yets

 

return job in future, unlessone of the birds gets it

A single wire strand ~9" above the picket would provide a visible deterrent wouldn't it, giving you effectively a nearly 4' fence?

personally i would go for a taller fence say 6 ft. but then if he's the one who has chickens then he should know & should have asked you for that. not moan afterwards & piss you about...
