Not sure cracker. I tend to sell sawn wood not wood in the round. I am tight though, and cornish timber is generally of a poorer quality than from up country. I get my softwood from dartmoor area usually, or a few plantations down here, but decent hardwood comes from devon usually, or Lord Falmouths estate, but he is VERY expensive. Over £5/ foot roadside!!!! (nice logs mind)

I'm paying £2 for "beam oak". However, this stuff is mostly less than 24" and bent, so pretty wasteful. But for cleaving, which is mainly what I do, it works fine.

If i have to extract the log then i dont generaly pay for it, or give a gesture, as at the moment even though they know it will have a value, that value is irrelevant until you or someone else has got it out, milled it, dried it, planed it etc etc.

If they get it to roadside then it may be worth ABOUT a quid per cubic foot, if they deliver then 3-5 per cubic foot (*hoppus feet). Big logs, although attractive seeming, can be a lot more hassle than they are worth, alot of commercial mills wont deal with that size at all any more, preferring up to 2'6"-3' generally as a max. There can be large shakes in the timber when it is that size, or pockets of decay from years back etc etc, hence the small value in its raw state.

Once it is milled, green oak seems to be fetching up to about £35/ cubic foot, depending on quality and beam/ board size. Air dry about £10 more per cube.

Hope this helps, good luck, and pm me if you want any more advice.

Agree with all the above there Tom! But I only get around £20-00 per cube for green oak around here. There's a sawmill nearby who sells for £16-00 a cube.

If the tree is on someones land offer them a plank or 2 in exchange. Or get them to help for the day and they have a bit more. A gesture is better than offering cash.

If they stick to their guns then give them your phone number and say if they change their minds then they can call you!
