No mate, its made like that to protect the glass.

I know this is granny and eggs and all but have to ask!

have you ever tried unscrewing it?

I find it hard to imagine Nikon of all manafacturers would do such a ridiculous thing as a permanent hood! if it doesnt screw off, then that is pathetic, Canon would NEVER do that, all lenses like this should have lugs or screw fitting at the lens glass edge?

if fixed for certain, GUTTED for you john.

Mate, don’t be gutted – that lens is one of, if not THE best quality optic they have ever produced (you just have to pick and choose your composure).

I'm building a collection of glass anyway...i'll just buy another one if needs be.

Well, quality glass or not, the lens aint much good with a fixed hood, there is another option , canon do this with ultra long lenses that have fixed hoods, a drop in filter that slides through a slot, if the glass is that high a quality, then this might be your situation too.:001_smile:

Canon L-Series glass for me! Only ones with fluorite crystal, optics to die for!:thumbup1:

Not a cheap hobby is it john!
