If you use flyers that are eyecatching and look professional saying your quals and that your insured and you are willing to give customer references if you have them, wouldnt that be better than sitting at home hoping for the phone to ring?

I hear what you're saying, but Trading Standards in Cornwall do advise consumers not to use tradesmen who advertise via flyers. There was a piece in our local paper a couple of weeks ago saying just this. Better off putting your money towards some proper advertising imo.

Since when has the general public listened to consumer advice?

You cant beat word of mouth and a good reputation, but until you've had a chance to build that up, any form of advertising that gets a foot in the door is good.

I'm sure a lot do, especially some old people who have watched one to many episodes of Rogue Traders. When I get a flyer shoved through the door I think it seems like an act of desparation, and I wonder why they aren't doing enough work to afford proper advertising.

My advice from experiance is dont live out of your means, buy as you need and not to get finance for anything until you have enough work to pay for it.

Sort of agree with that, but I'm sure there's many a successful business that started out on borrowed money:icon14:

I think you'll find that many large Co's spend thousands on flyers, also known as junk mail and it is "proper advertising".

People here ain't talking about the tick the box and put it in the window type flyer, they are taking about a leaflet with you Co's details, land line, address etc.

Getting junk mail from an international credit card company or an energy supplier is a bit different to having a flyer from the 'The Tree Fella' stuck through your letterbox. You can't even begin to compare the two. Everyone knows that if they get a creditcard offer from Barclaycard in the post then it's genuine, you can't say the same about some local start-up that nobodys heard of.

Your right with that but the times arnt flush with tree work at the moment,so i wouldnt get finance not yet nehow.

I always get more work year on year, and this year hasn't been any different so far.
