I had the same problem, trying to get a controlled decent with one hand is more or less impossible, nearest I got was to wear a leather glove and hold the tail of the climbing rope between thumb and forefinger, where it comes out the lockjack and pull on the lever with the same hand.

I have been using the Lockjack for over a year now and love it.

D Mc, watch your wooden handle doesn't get caught in your lower biner, the cam will be held open and you will drop very quickly, maybe better to use a smaller biner.

Tim, I appreciate the heads up and yes I am aware of the dangers of using the "William" (HMS style) carabiner. My camera evidently distorts the image somewhat as the carabiners look wider but then so do I! :) They are actually the Petzl Am'Ds the ones recommended by the manufacturer, ART.

When I first heard about the problem with the ball, I tried forcing it through the carabiners and just couldn't do it. I thought about removing it, as some have done, but every once in awhile it comes in handy. As a rule I don't "pull" on it. For limb walking and faster descents, I use a twisting motion with my left hand. (Usually only my ring finger will be pressing against the furlow.) This gives me fairly precise control.

How do you like yours?

Didn't realise they were the biners recommended by the ART, thanks for that. Probably worthwhile showing the pics anyway as a few folk have been giving the Lockjack to borrow/try without knowing about this safety issue.

expensive tool just for ascending big trees. just as effective and cheaper methods out there.

i love my lock jack been on it 3 years. works alot better on a static rope. you just pull out the rope or feed it back in when limb walking, without having to touch the device. less lurchiness(if thats a word)
