Yes, but the whole point of this new truck is it's off road capability.

 

You may as well get a two wheel drive with twin rears if it's weight carrying you want.

 

There'll never be one that's good at both, unless of course it's call a Mog, but then I think they are top heavy with a load off road :icon14:

They are ok for carrying weight Lee, but dual wheels off road are not as good, simply down to physics.

 

You are sharing ground contact pressure between two wheels instead of one.

 

My landrover was shite off road with wide tyres, I put narrow ones on and off road ability improves immeasurably

Sorry Dean, but I've owned both, and duals beat singles, both off and on road. We had an old MK with singles, it was ok, but the 4x4 merc with duals was noticably better, especially in the squishy stuff.

 

Unimogs are to small to be carrying serious weight.

Just realised - the Canter 4x4 is only available as a 7.5 tonner, which makes sense as a 4x4 3.5 canter would leave you with about a 60kg payload.

 

The low box/diff lock would be good for reversing trailers/chippers/log loads up gravelly driveways or driving up bad farm tracks. But economically speaking the 2x4 3.5 canter does seem to make the most sense as the twin rear wheels make it half decent off road.

 

Found this, taking a run up is nearly always bad news.

You can only compare with like for like tyres anyway and depends on the surface.

 

Sometimes you need low ground pressure (flotation) to prevent you sinking down, othertimes you need narrows to cut thru the slippy stuff down to solid.

 

I've had an MK in some extreme off road conditions and on some extreme slopes, I've wrote one off taking it too far, I have a high degree of respect for the old girls with the right tyre, they would piss all over a merc 4x4 IMO :icon14:

Seeing as that was such a bad example of off road driving its only fair to show how it should be done.

 

You couldn't do this in a Landy as it would fall to pieces like a Citreon 2CV (kidding).
