Its no good if you do the course then are stilled shunned by the local bat group.

 

To be honest if it's just a basic bat awareness course it probably doesn't contain much more than you can learn yourself online, correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I am left with a distrust of bat groups now, by being full of self importance they are doing themselves nor the bats any good

I have done the course and thought it was a waste of my time, it teaches the absolute basics, and doesnt give you any right to actually check a tree for bats......

 

Just go to Bat Conservation Trust and download the free leaflets and you will learn more FOR FREE.

 

Plus if you dont attend the course and do come across bats on a job you can claim you had no idea, whereas if you do the course and distub a bat you are opening your self up to prosecution.

 

Bat groups are generally a bit up themselves and weary of outsiders. I have done alot of bat work directly with our ecologist and attended the local bat group for quite a while, wasnt made to feel welcome, they met in a pub and didnt want you to have a beer

 

I liked it to a local meeting of the taliban with there coded talk and death wish to anybody that could or may disturb, injure or kill a bat, to be honest dean as a tree surgeon you are the President Bush of the infidel to bat people

As I have said on similar threads in the past, if you are after a quick fix course that gives you the right to (and I quote) check a tree for bats, and possibly disturb them, forget it. I mean, would you expect to do a 2 day NPTC course and be a fully qualified, proffesional arborist, NO.

 

As for some of the comments flying around about bat workers, I have in my own experience come across arborists who are just as wary, unhelpful, and unwilling to share information as some of the groups previously mentioned. I really don't think it helps anybody wanting to progress their career, or find out more about something that could potentially cost them their career if things went wrong, coming out with negative comments.

I have come from an Ecology background and would love to learn more about arboriculture, but am having trouble finding a proffesional outfit to take me onboard, even after offering free time to try and progress. I am ending up having to do it all alone, without any assistance from somebody in the know, and this is after going to the Arb Association/other organistations for assistance. Sound familiar to those wanting to find out more about bats????

Chris...I wouldn't expect a quick fix course, if there were a 1 or 2 year course that I could fit in with my work I would have done it.

 

Every bat worker I have come across has been the same, guarded and secretive, if they guenuinely have a concern for bats they would be more open and willing to share info

Really sorry to hear you have had bad experiences with bat workers Dean.

I know it's easy for me to say, but keep trying, we are not all like that and the work may be time consuming, there may be a lot to take in, but it is really enjoyable and worth the experience.
