Not wanting to stick my nose in...

But a coronet cut on a tree that is in decline, could potentially stimulate more growth from the cut and there for introduce more energy and what not into the tree through photosynthesis. Giving it a new lease of life, potentially..

this is exactly the case on a willow at standrews cathedral .coronet cuts were made to app 9 inch diameter branches ,two years on there are "tufts" of new growth which looks anything but natural.

Due to the nature of this work (habitat creation) do you think it's acceptable to wear spikes to access and work in the tree, to increase climber safety and introduce small wounds to create further habitat for pathogens and plants?

Perhaps, and I have, but that was in a woodland setting when safe work positioning wasn't posible and platform access wasn't an option. I certainly wouldn't be the first to moan if someone else decided to do it.
