Arbtalk sub forum

Alaskan mill UK now has its own informal sub forum on arbtalk which can be visited here

Alaskan Mill - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists

Bear in mind if you join Arbtalk you are automatically entitled to a 10% discount on all products (this is not advertised anywhere). The only disadvantage of this is that we currently have to process this discount manually – i.e. you will have to call or e-mail us.

The more chainsaw milling I do the more essential I see it is the chain that is the chainsaw. Getting the teeth the same length, the correct shape and the depth gauges right is crucial. With normal chainsaw work a chain at 50% cutting efficiency will still work. In milling you’re going to put a lot of stress on yourself and the chainsaw if the chain is not right. Chainsaw milling should feel smooth and progressive with the saw pulling you through the wood.

This website here will tell you a lot of info it is worth taking the time to read Guide Bar & Saw Chain Menu By looking more at how a chain and guide bar work will increase your milling productivity.

Second is the bar – if the groove is worn and there is too much play the mill can be stopped in its tracks. Always dress and reverse the guidebar when replacing/changing a chain.

Third is the sprocket. A worn sprocket can wear the drive links causing fast wearing of the guide bar groove. Change the rim (or whole sprocket if an older set up) after every 2 new chains.

And a newsletter would be no use at all without any special offers. These offers will not show on the website – you’ll have to call or e-mail us. Unfortunately we are often out milling ourselves so please leave a message if we don’t answer and we’ll call you back. If you are an Arbtalk member you do not get the discount and the 10% ! Just one or the other!

All offers are valid only until the 7th April, 2010

Chain offers

If you’re unsure of what chain you need go here OREGON®: Selector Guide

Although for MS880 or Husqvarna 3120 with 36” bar .404 chain there is a mistake – you need 108 drive links and not 104!!

Granberg ripping chain .404 .063 £0.40 per drive link (usual price £0.45 drive link)

Granberg ripping chain 3/8 and .325 all gauges £0.35 per drive link (usual price £0.40 drive link)

Oregon ripping chain .404 .063 £0.30 per drive link (usual price £0.35 drive link)

Oregon ripping chain 3/8 and .325 all gauges £0.25 per drive link (usual price £0.30 dive link)

Oregon multicut chain – this chain has 3 times the thickness of chrome on the cutter top plate and gives better stay sharp qualities in gritty conditions. £0.35 drive link (usual price £0.45 drive link). Available all chain sizes except .404.

Buy any 4 chains at the above offer prices and get the cheapest chain free!!

12v handheld grinders £25-00 instead of £29-00

12v precision grinder (this is the one you want really!) £40 instead of £49.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG-tdr3X2s0]YouTube - Precision Grinder.wmv[/ame]

Buy any grinder and get 3 packs of grinding stones for £10-00 (instead of £15).

GB chainsaw bars from Australia.

These should be here in 3 weeks. This offer applies to those who wish to pre order to take advantage of the discounted prices as below. (Although we have 3x 50” bars in stock).

Also to bear in mind that there is a paint issue with these bars in that it appears to wear off quickly! This does not affect the performance and I have been using a 50” bar for the last 6 weeks and have found it performs well with very little flex and is hard wearing. Weight is a little heavier than a Cannon superbar equivalent.

50” GB extra long sprocket nose bar £175-00 (currently 3 in stock) – usually £230-00

60” GB extra long sprocket nose bar £190-00 usually £250-00

66” GB extra long sprocket nose bar £210-00 usually £270-00

72” GB extra long sprocket nose bar £240-00 usually £300-00

84” GB extra long sprocket nose bar £270-00 usually £350-00

They will fit Stihl 880 mounts and there is a small adapter that comes with each bar for fitting smaller Husqvarna 3120 mounts. Oil holes are present for each make of saw.

Mini mill – kit yourself out with the best accessory to go with your Alaskan £75-00 (usually £95-00).

Delmhorst moisture meter £95-00 (usual price £135-00). One of the best meters on the market. Gives consistent accurate results unlike other cheaper meters.
