Monkey puzzle tree

Hi

Just curious as to what people think of monkey puzzle for a firewood?

I presume it will be hard but not sure!

 

Anyone any experience of this as a woodfuel?

good luck lol. everything burns, but it is horrible stuff to work with and you will need to be patient for it drying out, oh and buy a fireguard lol. for own use maybe, to sell i wouldnt wate my time

When it's dry it's great firewood - really surprised me. But the stuff I've got at the mo was standing dead for three years so as Stevie says yours will take some drying.

Saw the rings to avoid the knots - they're like iron.

 

If you can be bothered you can make a few quid selling the rings to woodturners, who absolutely love the stuff, but they'll want at least 4" of wood each side of the knots, more on the larger rings. Any spalting will be an added attraction.

If selling it to would turners keep the knots in as when turned it looks fantastic, not many turners about that turn it tho as the knots can distroy the gouges.

Where abouts are you based and whats the size and diameter of the timber??

Nepia - is there any one who would consider buying it then? it has been down for a few years now

Might know someone who is intrested but maybe a bit far to travel, i will dig out his email address and pm you. Have you got pics of some of the rings so i can take a look??

I know he offers about £10 per ring depending on condition.

Just find some local woodturners clubs online and e-mail them. That's what I did and have just sold six 28" rings to a turner from Cirencester and am taking seven 20" rings to Exeter with me when I pop down to there for Easter. All from cold calling so to speak. The smaller bits went first to local turners via a contact here so I think you'll do OK with the 10" stuff but 4" diameter is too small due to the knot size, assuming the wood's in good condition.

i can get my hands on a monster monkey puzzle thats been standing dead for years, it is rotten on the outside of the base but i reckon it will be fine inside. is there value in it in boards, i got some milled years ago and it looked great, but i dont know what happened to the stuff as i lost contact with the mill guy.

Boards? Crikey, never heard of that. Wouldn't the branch cores pop out of the pale wood when it dried?

If you were anywhere near Stevie I'd take the thing off you if it was available but for you to drop it, ring it the right way, move it (in 200lb lumps!)... well, you're not going to are you - understandably. But if you think it may be worth something for planking you need to ask someone other than me.

i saw the milled posts and planks, it was beautiful stuff, but i dont know if it lasted.
