ACE Winches

Re-gurgitating this thread.... the ACE winches still seem good value for money. Anyone had any problems with them?

I'm thinking of ordering one. cheers

We've got one. Used it a few times and it did the job, but found it really difficult to release the cable to pull slack through by hand.

Thanks. Would you say it's worth spending the extra for a Tirfor? (they cost quite a bit more).

I've not used a tirfor, but I would definitely want to try out some others before buying an ace

I'm on a ACE - bar the tip of the wire rope not being welded correctly (got it replaced with a nice discount) first time round, I've used it in anger a fair bit over the last 10 months and no problems to date.

 

Tirfors are really expensive and a brand name.

Tirfor. I was sold on a tu16 that I borrowed years ago, saved up and bought a rather shiny one from ebay.

 

I paid around £200

 

Wait and keep a saved 'tirfor tu16' search on eBay.

 

Tirfor are night and day compared to Ace (and the like)

 

Although if your on a time crunch an Ace will do the job fine, maybe a little less power than a tirfor ( as my 3.2t ace is no match for the much lighter 1.6t tirfor in real life)

 

Also tirfor is probably just nicer to use .. After all they are +600 quids!!

I got a really nice Tirfor tu16 off ebay for £200 with brand new tirfor wire rope. I think that is cheaper than a new Ace and will certainly last me a lifetime. I did consider getting an Ace at the time but this Tirfor turned up and glad I got it. Id say get the 1.6t over the 3.2t which is just too much of a lump to be easy to use and carry. You can always use redirects to generate more pull if needed...

Thankyou chaps - that's really helpful. I'm not needing one urgently so will wait for a used Tirfor 1.6t to turn up.

Still very happy with my Ace (1.6), bought to replace a stolen Tirfor. The build quality is a bit cheesier, but for the price it is superb, it has rolled and tweaked some monstrous bits of timber onto the mill for me.

 

By the look of it, the 'mid priced' winches badged as Yale or Draper are exactly the same as an ACE so there's probably no point thinking that they are any better quality.

The Tirfor TU16 is the puppy to go for

 

It's a 1.6T dead lift and will(should/rated to) pull 3.2T

 

Anything heavier is going to be weighty and very slow..

 

Also Agreed about the Ace, same as the rest but cheaper especially on eBay 👍
