There's no shame in being able to do a TD with no spikes. Think of it as practice for the times your pruning and cant use them.

 

No shame at all, I hated spikes to start with, but will always wear them now unless I have to top a tree,,, sorry I mean do a heavy reduction and don't want to leave spike marks.

 

Spikes help to give you a better position, especially when you bring out the big saws and need to rig stuff down.

But being able to do take downs without them is good to.

Unless your into pole climbing all TCC events are non-spike, so getting practice running free round a tree is great, I hate spikes and usually have them sent up at the latter stages of a take down. They are helpful when you need them, but mostly uncomfortable and they restrict movement.
