chipper size?

Was having a chat with a local tree chap discussing chipper sizes and he got me thinking?

I gather a 5" or 6" chipper is the norm . But he said why go above 3" as you can sell 4" wood as firewood ?

makes sense or not? 1. the chipper is cheaper and 2. you can produce more firewood , (more firewood = more bucks?)

It will take you ages to chip with a small chipper like that...you will end up cutting small branches off branches to fit them in....whereas a bigger chipper will pull them all through...also think about Conifer Willow and Poplar etc which is absolute shite and u cant really sell it as "bucks" so u would be gratefull for a larger chipper. but at the end of the day it depends what you want to get into and where you see yourself in the future

I have a Hilux and made a higher back myself...i have a 6" PETROL Entec machine....and everything else goes on the wood pile but i have gone into partnership with another fella who has a bigger LDV and is a hardworking groundie

one of the petrol timberwolf's. for the size and cost they are a very good machine.

so just because you have a 6" chipper you don't necessarily (not spelt right i'm sure???!!) have to put 6" stuff in it? it just handles the smaller stuff quicker, am i right?

Yeah you have to watch the weight though...had mine a bit heavy many times....but the truck is good as gold mate and the back i build can be fitted in 2 seconds easily

I will try and get a pic and compare. any idea of size? eg. height of the top at the back?
