from my understanding of it, he doesnt display a vat reg no, just charges +17.5%. When someone asked him for a vat invoice, he said, "I dont have one". So he didnt get his 17.5% this time. But I'd just really hate to see someone come unstuck through ignorance.

Andy

you can charge vat if you are registering but havent yet rec'd a number

you can claim back vat that you have paid on capital expenditure / kit . that you still have for upto 3 yrs + can claim 6mths vat back from the date of reg

YOU cannot charge vat if you arent registering its fraud & its the customs boys that come calling.& they play by a serious set of rules

Your competitor should be very very careful if he is doing what you suspect.

I have heard of people selling vehicles & stickin the vat on the bill by making up a seven digit number, they get spotted eventually, but by then they've moved the caravan.

If someone is Vat reg or ltd company, I believe you can look up their last couple of years turnover - tho it might cost you a couple of bob.

It is done through companies house.

Correct me if I'm wrong!!!

Ltd, yes you can:icon14:

Shouldn't be charging VAT if not reg'd. If you are registering for VAT you can claim back the VAT on capital expenditure for the last 3 years - but you don't add VAT to every invoice you have wrote in the last 3 years! Is this guy saying that the extra 17.5% he is charging is VAT - or is he just charging an extra 17.5%?

You can charge VAT retrospectively if the customer agrees, i went back several months when i first registered, councils and large Co's don't mind.
