pop into a saw shop and you can pick it all up. what you need, combi spanner, files round and square, file handles, raker gauge and bar scraper. voila one chainsaw sharpening kit.

I never use a file guide. learn waht a sharp cutter looks and feels like.

Oh and after every cut don't stop for a drink of water

Keeping the teeth an even size is just as important as keeping the teeth sharp. Shapening your saw in the field is a nessesary skill but keep an eye on the tooth length if they become uneven they put unessesary strain on the chain and in time it may fail causing injury.

I've just serviced my neighbours chainsaw what a mess! Everything clogged with chain oil and saw dust the teeth were all over the place and the chain was so slack you could almost pass a finger between it and the bar, as long as you didn't mind taking your finger off on the burred edges.

when new guys start i always ask how good their bar and chain maintenance is. they always say good. I then proceed to tell tehm thats what i thought before i started.

oh and when producing timber sned off all pegs and collars, but thats another rant

thought this look handy.

dont waist your money on all those fancy sharpening devices they'll get used once and then get chucked aside most take longer to set up than it does to sharpen:thumbsdown:

IMO there is only one way to learn how to sharpen a saw and that is to sharpen a saw and then sharpen a saw and then sharpen a saw, again and again and again.
