Advice for son who likes to climb trees

Question

Posted

Good morning,

My son has started to like climbing trees.   I am looking for some advice.

When I was a kid (now 50 and haven’t climbed a tree in years) we were always told if the branches is thicker than your wrist you can stand on it.

Is this true or what advice would you give him about thickness of branch and safety for tree climbing.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Big smiles

I wouldn't give you or him any advice, your kid, your responsibility. climbing trees in the context of this forum is from a professional viewpoint by highly trained and qualified people, not a guide for parents to pass on to kids, what happens when he invariably takes a fall? "

"an arborist told me it would be fine"

Don't do it😆 when I Was a chunky monkey due to medical condition and side effects of the medication ....

I landed myself in a river up north ..the branch in question was over a 1ft round ...I guess from memory it was a willow ...

Other dire trees are like poplar also quite brittle.

There may be the occasional exception to this rule.
