Although I have not physically seen it or handled it. It is allegedly very heavy and doesn't Poplar have a particular scent?

Probably just heavy because it's wet. It's not a great firewood because most of that weight is water, it's quite lightweight when its seasoned.

Been a while since I've had any so can't quite remember the smell, but I've a vague memory of it being sweetish but also slightly unpleasant somehow.

If it is the smell I am thinking of, it reminds me of cigar boxes from the 70’s.

😀And don’t listen to them, it is a fantastic firewood if it’s free😀
