I've had two of these v-twins, the only starting issues I've had with them is carb related. I used to take them to an old boy who's work was garden machinery, he could have the carb off, cleaned and back running in half hour. they really don't like stale fuel.

Just to chuck in my two penn'orth on the side; also only regarding the single cylinder mowers but my first go to is always clean the gunge out of the carb bowl and clean the white chalky encrustinations out of the main jet with a set of fine carb files (look upon it as an opportunity to buy)

Just to update this thread, we stripped and cleaned the carb, and adjusted the choke and throttle linkages which didn't seem right. It now starts better than ever before (better even than the day it was delivered new) and I wonder if it hadn't been correctly adjusted when assembled.

Many thanks to all for the helpful suggestions, much appreciated. 👍

Glad you got it sorted.  I just read the thread and was about to say this is bound to be carb related.   This is all Ive ever had to do on older B&S engines.

Glad it is all OK and it seems similar to the suggestions I made. I had similar on my Rover mower which wasn't switching of or starting well and turned out to be a dry throttle cable lacking full travel plus the obligatory carb issues...all good!
