Beech squirrel damage

Question

Hi

We have a lovely beech tree in the garden that suffered squirrel damage about 10 years ago and again last year. Climbing around in the canopy I see it is worse than I thought. Lots of areas of striped bark where the wood is starting to soften. I can push fingernails into the bare patches.
What to do? If it’s going to loose limbs in years to come I’d rather fell it and replant with something a little more garden sized.
I don’t think selective limb removal is an option, more than half are damaged. Chilterns area if that makes a difference

I would not worry in a woodland setting, apart from the loss in production but you have answered your own question; the tree is compromised to the extent that arching limbs may fail, especially after fresh damage, it is not a tree of good form and it is not a tree for a garden with limited space.
