he had a ms 310 with 18 inch bar and a ms390 with 20 inch bar - the ms390 was only 35 pound more. so i said why not. its a fair step up from the ms230 i was used to !!!!!!!!!!!!

The ms230 is a forestry saw which I use all the time for logging and occassionaly get the ms390 out for bigger stuff. The ms390 is a lower spec saw for lighter use around the farm.

MS 230 is a spot on saw for fire wood for an amature user, If you need to ask about chains and what chains to buy why do you need such a big saw for firewood, using a big saw for firewood with a big bar you need to watch the kick back zone.

Also remember an MS230 with a 14" bar will cut approx 26" and is easier to use and lighter.

If the wood's dirty, you might make more headway with a semi chisel chain. The corner of the chain is slightly curved, like on Oregon Microchisel rather than square. This sort of chain is easier to sharpen, and doesn't lose its edge as quickly as full chisel if the wood is dirty. There's slightly less risk of kick back. The down side is that it doesn't cut as fast as full chisel.
