Srt and drt

Hi all

 

Im about to delve into the world of srt.

 

I have bought a beginner kit rope wrench and hitch climber ect

 

I was going to start only using it as a means for access and switch over to drt.

 

My question is can i use the srt and a second rope on drt to climb around on and be classed as being on 2 ropes system? Basically taking the 2nd rope up with me or get a groundsman to clip it on after my ascent.

 

2nd question i know there are benefits to each but which is a better option for a beginner to climb on for srt canopy or basal?

Interesting question about the 2nd line. Standard practice for a lot of industrial and rope rescue is a Petzl ASAP or similar on a static second line, which follows you around quietly and only bites when it moves quickly. Handy to have and just forget about it, but I don't know how that fits in with the legal requirements in UK arb.

Not a problem, a lot of climbers do the same especially while getting to grips with SRT.  You would need two systems while ascending to be compliant with current regulations.

Not sure either is 'better' for a beginner. Use whichever is best for a given situation. 

 

Base anchor can avoid the need to isolate a limb when installing an access line but will double load the top & additional bounce in the system will be less efficient.

 

Often safer to work off a canopy anchor - base is vulnerable to chainsaw cuts from careless groundies & entanglement when dropping out limbs.

It is definitely job dependent, but I normally use a base tie to ascend then switch to a canopy anchor.

You can make that retrievable from the ground if you like.

 

Can’t comment on the 2-rope system I’m afraid!
