Safety/serial number tags on ropes

Never heard that before, how and why would you do that?

Did the rope come with a tag on it? You would need to have a serial number on it for LOLER purposes. Every item needs to be traceable back to a unique serial  number. Also a date of manufacture would be ideal. It has been mentioned that there should be a tracer label inside the rope but I would have thought most shops would/should send lengths of rope out with the information labelled on the rope. I know whenever I’ve brought ropes by the metre they’ve come tagged.
