safest way to take the top out?

if there is space to drop it, its getting dropped. if im not sure about the lean then a ropes going on it. it takes more time to climb to the very top and dismantle every branch. its probably safer to do it in smaller bits tho

Climb it high every time, unless you were promised by a mate it was only half a days work and then discover you've got to dismantle 2 largish ash trees over a streetlight wire. In that case tie a rope round the wire and have your groundie pull it tight against the tree then fell just above it . see pic, ten minutes later the guy on the excavator broke the line anyway.

 

Always make sure that your strop is attached to your main d and not side d's though, even for small ones.

 

Or, make sure you're cuts are accurate if you fear the possibility of a barber chair.

This really interests me,do you really think you're body weight is equal to the wind?

 

I went up some whippy multi stemmed lawsons last week and the wind caused more violent sway and bending than I did. When the gusts of wind died out I sprang back with the stems. I was climbing to 4' diameter.
