The power of fungi- saving the planet

Recommended Posts

When i first got into Fungi I had no idea just how important they where, I knew they where important, but just how profoundly so I had yet to discover.

If you doubt the power of fungi, or are interested in ways we can alter our impact upon the earths eco system and enhance its health, remediate our catastrophic impact, then these links will open you mind and your hearts to the power of fungi. Fungi rule the planet, they are the supreme life form, fair to say that we only exist due to them, trees too.

I never thought i would find a subject that would consume me so, but if you watch the stamets seminar video in the second link youll understand my obbsession with the fifth kingdom.

I think davids going to like this one!

TED produce some very thought provoking presentations by some very prominent individuals in their own specialist fields.

As I have indicated in other threads I have a great deal of admiration and respect for the work Paul Stamets has done but I do recognise that he has recieved quite strong criticism for the manner in which he tends to present his opinion (based on his experience) as proven empirical fact.

I entirely share his position describing fungi as gateway pioneer species in terrestrial ecosystems.

It is their intimate relationship with veteran and ancient trees which for me places even greater importance on those long lived stable organisms.

Fungi and thier relationships with trees, particulary the vets fascinates me. I just dont look at decay in the same way anymore, my friends think I am nuts and would fell some things on sight, me i see the long term picture and cant wait till Im in a position to understand this proscess more fully.

Hama, don't worry there are a great many more members of that mad rotters party (to quote a US friend a while back) than you think.

I hope more and more Arbs will take the time and trouble to read up, listen to and personally observe the relations between fungi and plants (Trees), I really wish this material had been around when I was at school and college, but I am very grateful that it is around now.

Hi Hama

first - while I'm in apology mode, I tried to pm you ages ago but your inbox was full. I did a lengthy one but basically I apologise for the trying to be like M..d comment. It was wrong, uncalled for and b***llks and I'm sorry.

That out of the way -

In a previous life I was a worm farmer in australia (no s**t), this means massive compost piles, to feed massive wormbeds. The worms were farmed to be used in a grey water recycling system, which worked the same way the soil works.

A world expert on composting and soil mycelium is a Dr Elaine Ingham. I have her research CD's, or lecture cd's on my lap top. You can google her, or if you like, if you can tell me how to do it I will get coppies to you by way of apology. :001_smile:

When you get to know me better youll know I am not the sort of guy to "step into" anyones shoes, I make my own path and have my own mind and ideas and opinions. I hold David in the highest esteem, his knowledge far exceeds my own, but it was in fact a compliment that you or anyone would think me capable of even trying to "steal" his presence on the AT forum.

I accept your apology, and to be honest we all spout a bit of bollo.... on here from time to time, myself included! I dont hold grudges and hadnt even remembered who made the comment, ive gotten to know that 99% of us on here are darn good guys. I would like to think we are all friends and part of a family sharing what knowledge and experiance we have, not for ego or showboating but to progress our working knowledge and expand ideas and experiances.

This place is invaluable and I wish I had discovered it a lot sooner.

No worries dude:thumbup:
